Gorinchem
Gorinchem, the largest and this year also voted the most beautiful (by the ANWB) fortified town in the Netherlands, is just a short 15-minute drive from Family Resort Molenwaard. Take a stroll along the historic city walls, with the Dalempoort, impressive cannons, and windmills providing stunning views. Then continue into the bustling city centre, full of cozy terraces and unique shops.
During the Eighty Years’ War with Spain, medieval Gorinchem became a “modern” fortress. Even afterward, it remained a strategic stronghold in both the Old and New Dutch Waterlines. This military history has left a lasting mark on the garrison town; culture is everywhere. Highlights include the Grote Kerk, Huize Matthijs-Marijke, ’t Oude Stadthuys, and the Gorcums Museum. Still have time? Gorinchem is also the perfect starting point for scenic walking and cycling tours along the Linge, Maas, and Waal rivers!
